Perez Controversies

Possible Abolishment of Police -- The entire story of the near tragedy of a proposed abolishment of our police department can be read about in detail on the Support our Police page.

Chamber of Commerce (Tourism) -- Under a claim that the cost of an in-house tourism department would be less than the contract with the Chamber, on August 15, 2005, the Council voted not to renew a contract with the County Chamber of Commerce. Now we have a Chamber who promotes tourism for the county, and the addition of an 11-member Tourism Advisory Committee in the city. This all took place while, ironically, we had a hiring freeze! And isn't it a coincidence that Perez is head of this "newly developed Tourism Committee"? Plus, Ald. Graf's wife managed to get herself a position on this committee, in spite of being the least qualified, at a salary of $18.51 an hour. Also note: Alderwoman Cerda stated that the $107,000 start-up cost for a city tourism department failed to include "soft costs" and equipment costs. The saddest thing of this whole controversy is that Sheboygan is paying the highest price with the poorest quality toursim promotion to date, while the Chambers continues with it's professional, well-done tourism promotional material. Sheboygan lost big on this Perez idea.

General Rules of Order, Procedure and Conduct -- For Common Council, Commissions, Committees, Board Members and the Public. Note: There was some controversy among several alderperson's who felt some of the mayor's demands went a bit far, especially his repeated orders to be referred to as "Your Honor". It really does go too far...read them for yourself and see what you think:

Library -- Perez stated at a Common Council Meeting that "I am responsible for the Library and all City Departments - blame me for the Library Director's Contract, if you are going to blame anyone". He said at a previous Council Meeting, "I had nothing to do with the Library Director's Contract negotiations". However, the Library Director is on tape stating BEFORE the joint news conference that "Mayor Perez, herself, Library Board President Bernie Marketvitch and a "negotiator" (which we later learned was MLD), had numerous meetings to reach the amended contract - including the controversial Clause 13.

Police -- Susan Hart, Mayoral Assistant, wastes time and money in an attempt to discredit police officers. You have to read this one to understand it all (documents will open in a new window):

In addition to this report, the Chief of Police had to send the mayor a Memo regarding the concerns that resulted from the internal investigation, which classified Ms. Hart's allegations as unfounded.

Police Station:   The involvement of SCTA (Sheboyan County Taxpayers Alliance) is controversial at best. First, in August of 2005, the SCTA comes up with their Cost Saving Ideas for the City of Sheboygan. Please note number 17! Out of the blue, Perez is invited to speak at one of the SCTA meetings. View the e-mail sent to all members. Please read the note at the top of this page, as well. You may also Read the SCTA Meeting Agenda (Word .doc format. A new window will open with each document.)

Ald. Baumann: Mr. Baumann complained about Perez's ill placed committee chairmanships directly to Perez. Suddenly there is a very negative letter sent to Perez from Kohler Co. employee's about then Ald. Baumann. The strangest coincidence here is that Ald. Montemayor has a son who works at Kohler Company with former Ald. Baumann. (A bit too much of a coincidence, especially since Ald. Montemayor's son refrained from signing the letter personally, which would have made the connection blatently obvious).
Ald. Suscha tries to divert the scandal between her and Police Chief Kirk by the convenient slander of then Alderman Baumann. Read the letter from Mr. Baumann's attorney for further details:
Letter from Mr. Baumann's Attorney (Microsoft Word .rft format)
Letter from Mr. Baumann's Attorney (PDF format)

The press refuses to print the "Baumann letter" because the response (augmentation) was TOO incriminating to the mayor and Ald. Suscha.
