Perez: Police chief tried to influence committee choice The Press saw fit to threaten this site with copyright infringement. Note, however, nothing was illegal due to proper referencing of the source, author and date. I was assured of this by an attorney, but the Press is doing everything in its power to aid Perez in attacking me to have information removed from this site, so erring on the side of caution, henceforth only excerpts will be referenced. Thank you. The Issue: Police Chief Kirk expressed serious and valid concerns over a Perez appointment to the Public Protection and Safety Committee. Perez appointed Ald. Vicki Meyer, who had been previously arrested for Disorderly Conduct and Possession of Controlled Substance. This is public record; any citizen can look this up, yet Perez tried to undermine our Police Chief by saying he "Tried to influence the committee choice". Ask yourself this: Would it not stand to reason that a man who's life's work is to uphold the law, would have very valid concerns regarding this appointment? This was an outrageous accusation. It was nothing more than another attempt to discredit our police. Mayor Juan Perez said Monday that Police Chief David Kirk tried to pressure him to remove Ald. Vicky Meyer from a Common Council committee overseeing police and fire department issues. The mayor said Kirk told him if Meyer were appointed to the committee, a Sheboygan Police officer planned to reveal charges of possession of marijuana and disorderly conduct stemming from Meyer’s 1998 arrest at a picnic. After reviewing police reports and court files on Meyer’s case and consulting the city attorney, Perez said he chose to keep Meyer on his list of appointments.
“I wasn’t’ going to be pressured by anyone, including department heads, to not make a committee appointment simply because somebody did not like an alderman,” Perez said. “I have to do what’s best for the community.” Bob Lettre, chairman of the city’s Board of Police and Fire Commissioners, opposes Perez’s move to appoint Meyer to the committee because of the arrest. “This Mayor should be honorable and do the right thing, and this is not the right thing, period,” Lettre said. Perez said he supports having Meyer on the committee. Is this not obstinate? How does this "Respect the people's voice and concerns", as Perez states on his Web site.
