Verhasselt was part of the "Friends of Sheboygan Parks". View some of his comments as printed in the Beacon, October 2, 2004, in an article titled The Battle for Sheridan Park

"You might also wish to note the Perez lie in this article (highlighted in yellow) where he claims he contacted much of the Sheridan Park neighborhood, but the neighborhood people said the opposite. Verhasselt knew this was not true, yet never came forward and told the people the truth."

Verhasselt stated to the Press recently, that he isn't politically motivated and only ran as alderperson in order to represent the people. This doesn't sound like the man who said, in the above referenced article, "Cases like this have gone on all over the country, and they have succeeded," he (Verhasselt) said. "Politically, there’s something to be said here."
